This may be trivial to some people, but I just wanted to post this quickly as I’m sure many people starting out with the SharePoint branding will need to know this.
Where can you set the master page / page layouts if you create a Team Site / non publishing site collection? Well, Microsoft obviously knew that people would want to use the publishing features with the non publishing enabled site collections, so this is an example of where the feature framework really works well. To resolve the “problem” simply complete the following steps:
- Navigate to the landing page of your newly created site collection
- Click on “Site Actions”
- Click on “Site Collection Features”
- Enable “SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure”
- Click on “Site Actions”
- Click on “Manage site features”
- Enable “SharePoint Server Publishing”
Once this has been completed, you can again access the master pages and page layouts via site settings as you would normally do for a publishing portal.
YES. Thank you. I was puzzled why even the master page had StaticDisplayLevels=”2″ and MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels=”1″, however the navigation was split into Top Link Bar and Quicklaunch, with the Top Link Bar screen having no Heading ability.
Thanks for the help!!!
All a big pleasure. In the beta I’ve also found that team sites do not enjoy custom master pages at this point. All the best with your configuration going forward.
Regards.
I know this is an old post, but it maybe a helpful to correct the above.
Team sites (in fact any site) will support the master page. The issue is that in a team site, the default home page is a “wiki” page created in the library called “site pages”. All you need to do after following the instructions in this post (enable publishing being the key) is to create a publishing page – not a wiki page, not a WebPart page. Then, you can assign taht page as the home page.
Otherwise, you have to apply your master page to the System master page for the site if you want it to be applied to wiki pages (and sadly all the application pages supplied by Microsoft).
Hope this helps
Thanks for adding this Pierre.

Dec 2011 – THANK YOU!
I have ‘blagged’ a test server in advance of our organisation upgrading to SP2010 in 4 months and admit to midly panicking as SP2010 when installed defaults to ‘Office 2010′ look and feel. I eventually found a 2007 look and feel and was worried when I didn’t see the 2007 publishing page options.
Thanks for blogging about this, you have saved me a lot of time in working this out, but mostly had you not posted this I may not have looked at all because I thought they had ditched it altogether….. PHEW!
